Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common entrance examination which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission in various engineering courses like B.Tech, B.E, B.Arch and B.Planning under the direction of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
In 2012, CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) announced this common examination in place of AIEEE and IIT-JEE. JEE is being conducted into two parts, JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). In September 2013, the IIT Council approved the decision of the Joint Admission Board to continue with the two-phase JEE pattern (Mains followed by Advanced) for IITs in 2014.
Till 2017, the JEE (Main) has been the admission criteria to Undergraduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs, Other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, Institutions funded by participating State Governments, and other institutions.
From 2019, JEE Main is normally conducted twice a year in January and April.
The All India Council for Technical Education has mandated that all technical institutes across India will have to, from 2018, accept the JEE Main scores for admission to all undergraduate engineering and architecture courses. Hence, from 2018 onwards, JEE (Main) will be the single common entrance exam. Institutes will have the autonomy to give weightage to Grade 12 marks. It is also possible that the JEE (Main) may be held several times in a year.
Since 2021, JEE Main Paper 1 will also be utilised as the entry criterion for seats under DASA.
The Paper-1 of JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs.

JEE (Main) is conducted by CBSE during the month of May every year. Additionally, the candidates should satisfy at least one of the following two criteria for admission to IITs and ISM:
A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times and that too, in consecutive years. However, being in the top 224,000 in JEE (Main) is the prime eligibility criterion applicable to all irrespective of the attempt number.
